How to measure hCG hormone

A pregnancy test, whether taken at home or by a midwife/doctor, measures the hormone hCG. When an egg is fertilised, the hormone hCG is excreted in the urine and continues to increase during the first part of pregnancy. By detecting hCG in the urine, it is possible to determine whether a woman is pregnant or not. hCG normally starts to be produced by the fertilised egg after it has attached to the wall of the uterus, usually around 6-10 days after fertilisation. The level then normally increases very rapidly, doubling about every three days during the first third of pregnancy. By the time of the expected period, most women will have produced enough hCG to see a positive result; that is, they will have achieved an hCG level of 25mIU/ml, or more.

However, as we are all different, there may be individual variations. Some women may therefore see a positive result a few days before their expected menstrual period, while others will have to wait some more time. If the test shows that you are pregnant, you can be confident that the result is accurate as the tests are very sensitive. The test only informs you that there is hCG in your urine. It does not tell you how the pregnancy is doing, where it is located or how old it is.
How to take the test

How will the result be displayed?

The result will be shown as one or two red/pink lines on the test strip.

What do I need for the test?

In addition to the test stick, you will need a clean and dry container to collect the urine.
How to take the test

Open the package: take out the test and use it immediately. The test should be at room temperature when used.

Collect urine in a clean and dry container: A few centimetres from the bottom is enough.

Hold the test correctly: Hold the red handle, DO NOT TOUCH the white surface as this may give incorrect results.

Test – dip the dipstick with the arrows pointing downwards into the urine. Do not dip deeper than the max line.

After 15 seconds, pick up the stick and place it flat on a clean, dry surface.
Wait for 1-5 minutes

Wait for 1-5 minutes before reading the result and leave the test stick completely still. When the test stick starts to react, the whole result area will turn light pink.

Read the result

One or two clear pink/red coloured bands appear against a light background in the result area next to the coloured part, one line for control and the other line for test result. Read the result as soon as possible within 1-5 minutes, do not read any results after 5 minutes as this may give misleading results.

Positive result – pregnant

Two clear pink/red lines appear in the result area. If you see two clear pink/red lines, it means that you are most likely pregnant. The hue and colour intensity of the test line (T) may vary because different stages of pregnancy have different concentrations of hCG hormone. The colour shade does not affect the result but only pink/red colour gives valid result, if you get other colour wait two days and do another test. If you are unsure of the result, it is good to retest 2 days later, preferably with the first morning urine. If you are pregnant, contact your midwife or gynaecologist for advice.

Negative result – not pregnant

If only the control line appears in the result area, you are not pregnant. If you still don’t get your period, do another test after 2 days, preferably with the first morning urine. If you get the same result and do not get your period, contact your midwife or gynaecologist.

Invalid result

If no control line (C) is visible, no lines are shown at all, or if the lines are a colour other than pink/red, the test has not worked properly. This may be because the aspirator has not absorbed enough urine or you have not performed the test correctly. Do a new test and follow the instructions carefully. If the problem persists, contact RFSU.

Sometimes the test line (T) may be visible in a grey/white shade. The test is positive only when the test line (T) is clearly visible in a red or pink colour.

How reliable is the RFSU Pregnancy Test Strips in detecting pregnancy?

The pregnancy test is more than 99% accurate from the day you expect your period. We do not recommend that you perform the test before your expected period. Instead, use the RFSU Pregnancy Test Early which can be used to detect pregnancy at an early stage.

When can I start testing with RFSU Pregnancy Test Strips?

You can take the test from the same day as your expected period. If you have irregular periods, test taking into account the longest menstrual cycle you have had in recent months. If you get a weak positive result, it is recommended to test again with morning urine 2 days later.

What is the best time of day to take a pregnancy test?

You can test at any time of the day, but it is safest to measure morning urine, when the hCG concentration is highest.

I have previously taken a test and got the result ‘pregnant’, but later got the result ‘not pregnant’ or my period has arrived. What does this mean?

The test is 99% reliable in detecting the pregnancy hormone hCG from the day your period is expected. It is entirely possible that you may get a result showing ‘Pregnant’, but later get a new test result showing ‘Not pregnant’ or your period has started.
