Condom use among young people in the Nordics is dropping, and the gap between intention and actual use of protection is growing. To bridge this gap, Nordic condom brand RFSU is now launching Condom Call – a messaging service where voices from influencers, chlamydia, a sex educator, and “your brain” remind people to put on a condom.
According to RFSU’s latest survey, condom use among young people in the Nordics dropped from 57 to 54 percent over the past year after increasing over the last five years. To remind young people to use protection this summer, RFSU is now launching the Nordic campaign Condom Call, a messaging service where wingmen become the key to knowing when a reminder is actually needed.
– Condom Call addresses some of the key success factors for more people to succeed with condoms, just as most people want. Being reminded in the moment is one. We also know that the closest group of friends is the best support, and by being the one who supports you, you strengthen your own ability at another time. And doing it with a dash of humor in the midst of seriousness makes it much easier to get through. Condom Call can be the call-to-action that makes a difference, says Pelle Ullholm, sex educator at RFSU.
Condom Call is a messaging service where friends can send DMs via SMS, Messenger, TikTok, or Snapchat to remind each other about condoms. The voices for Condom Calls are provided by some of the Nordic region’s biggest influencers, Isa Östling, Mwuana, the initiators behind Tutto Svenskan – Swedens biggest sportpodcast, Martine Lunde, Even Sjamel, Olga Heikkala och Baka. but the service also offers more metaphorical options like “your brain,” chlamydia, and the sex educator. The prerecorded messages are available in both video and audio formats.
– Finding the right time and place to get young people to think about safer sex and condom use isn’t an easy task. We wanted to find a new way where humor carries the message and where the reminder also comes at the right moment, so that the condom actually gets used. By encouraging friends to help each other, we hope the campaign can create a positive chain reaction, says Anette Otterström, Nordic Brand and Communications Manager at RFSU AB.
The campaign is part of RFSU’s overall and long-term communication effort, Just Give A Fck*, in which RFSU’s condoms become a symbol of caring for yourself and others.
Condom Call launches June 13 in Sweden, Finland, and Norway and is activated on TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram.
