RFSU Pregnancy Test Early is our most sensitive pregnancy test that shows if you are pregnant already at 10 mlU/ml hCG in the urine. You can take the test 6 days before your missed period, which is 5 days before your expected period. It is easy to use and can be done directly in the urine stream. Quick response within 1-5 minutes. The test has a result window that shows a clear answer with one or two dashes. All RFSU pregnancy tests are over 99% reliable from the day you expect your period.

  • Category: Pregnancy self-test, ultra-early test.
  • Type of test: Stick with result window.
  • Packaging: Available in 1- and 2-pack.

Is the RFSU Early Pregnancy Test right for me?

The test is suitable for those looking for an ultra-early pregnancy test. Ultra-early and early pregnancy tests are extra sensitive and can detect hCG in urine at very low levels, meaning you can take the test several days before your expected period. The RFSU Early Pregnancy Test is an ultra-early pregnancy test with a sensitivity of 10 mlU/ml and can be taken as early as 6 days before your missed period.

  • How to measure hCG hormone

    How is hCG hormone measured?

A pregnancy test, whether taken at home or by a midwife/doctor, measures the hormone hCG. When an egg is fertilised, the hCG hormone is excreted in the urine and continues to increase during the first part of pregnancy. By detecting hCG in the urine, it is possible to determine whether a woman is pregnant or not. hCG normally starts to be produced by the fertilised egg after it has attached to the wall of the uterus, usually around 6-10 days after fertilisation. The level then normally increases very rapidly, doubling about every three days during the first third of pregnancy. Our Early Pregnancy Test can be started 6 days before your missed period, which is 5 days before your expected period*. It is safest to measure your morning urine, which has the highest hCG concentration. Most women will have produced enough hCG by the time they are 6 days before their missed period to see a positive result; that is, they will have reached an hCG level of 10mIU/ml, or more. However, as we are all different, there may be individual variations. Our test has a 75% reliability if tested 6 days before missed period. Some women may therefore see a positive result a few days before their expected period, while others will have to wait some more time. The test has over 99% reliability when tested on the same day as the expected period. If the test shows that you are pregnant, you can be confident that the result is accurate because the test is very sensitive. The test only informs

  • How to take the test

When can I take the test?

You can use the RFSU Pregnancy Test Early as early as 6 days before your missed period, which is 5 days before your period is expected. ‘Missed period’ refers to the day after your expected period. In lab tests, 75% of pregnancy results were detected 5 days before your expected period, 95% were detected 4 days before and >99% were detected from 3 days before your expected period. If you test before your expected period, you should use morning urine. If you get a weak positive result or are unsure of the result, test again with morning urine 2 days later.

*See table below showing % of pregnant results detected early by lab testing. The test result is more than 99% certain from the expected day of menstruation.

    table-test-early-pregnancytest

    How are the results displayed?

The result will be displayed as one or two red/pink bars in the test stick result window.

The result of the test is more than 99% certain from the expected menstruation day.

    How to take the test

You can take the test at any time of the day, but morning urine is recommended when HCG levels are highest. Read the instructions carefully before you start. Here is a step-by-step description of how to take the test correctly.

    1. Open the package: take out the test and use it immediately. The test should be at room temperature when used.
    2. Remove the cap: the absorbent tip becomes visible.
    3. Hold the test correctly: with the result window up and the tip down.
    4. Test directly into the urine stream: Urinate directly on the tip. Hold the test with the absorbent part pointing downwards in the urine stream for 10-15 seconds. Important: Avoid getting urine on the result window.
    5. Alternatively, collect urine in a clean, dry container and dip the aspirator in the urine for 20 seconds. Do not allow the urine level to rise above the plastic cover of the test strip. Only freshly collected urine samples should be used.
    6. Replace the cap.
    7. Place the test on a flat surface with the result window facing up.

    Wait 1-5 minutes

Wait 1-5 minutes before reading the result and leave the test completely still. When the test starts to react, the whole result window will turn light pink.

    Read the result

Read the result as soon as possible within 1-5 minutes, do not read any results after 5 minutes as this may give misleading results.

    Positive result – Pregnant

Two clear pink/red lines appear in the result area. If you see two clear pink/red lines, it means that you are most likely pregnant. The hue and colour intensity of the test line (T) may vary because different stages of pregnancy have different concentrations of hCG hormone. The colour shade does not affect the result but only pink/red colour gives a valid result, if you get another colour wait two days and do another test. If you test early or are unsure, it is good to retest 2 days later, preferably with the first morning urine. If you are pregnant, contact your midwife or gynaecologist for advice.

    positive-test-pregnancy-test-rfsu

    Negative result – Not pregnant

Only a pink/red control line (C) is shown in the results window.

If you still don’t get your period, do another test after 2 days, preferably with the first morning urine. If you get the same result and do not get your period, contact your midwife or gynaecologist.

    negative-pregnancy-test-rfsu

    Invalid result

If no pink/red control line (C) is visible, no lines are shown at all or if the lines are a different colour than pink/red, the test has not worked properly. This may be because the aspirator has not absorbed enough urine or you have not performed the test correctly. Do a new test and follow the instructions carefully. If the problem persists, contact RFSU.

Sometimes the test line (T) may be visible in a grey/white shade. The test is positive only when the test line (T) is clearly visible in a red or pink colour.

How reliable is the RFSU Pregnancy Test Early to detect pregnancy?

The RFSU Pregnancy Test Early can be used to detect pregnancy at an early stage. The test can be taken as early as 6 days before the missed period, which is 5 days before the expected period. In lab tests, 75% of pregnancy results were detected 5 days before the expected period, 95% were detected 4 days before and more than 99% were detected from 3 days before the expected period. Our pregnancy test is therefore more than 99% accurate from the day you expect your period.

When can I start testing with the RFSU Pregnancy Test Early?

You can take the test from 6 days before your missed period, which is 5 days before your expected period.  If you have irregular periods, test according to the longest menstrual cycle you have had in recent months. If you get a weak positive result, it is recommended to test again with morning urine 2 days later.

What time during the day should I take a pregnancy test?

The optimal time to do a pregnancy test is with the morning urine because it has the highest hCG concentration.

I have tested with the RFSU Pregnancy Test Early and got a very faint line, what does that mean?

It may indicate that you are testing early and the hCG level has not yet risen enough in your body for the test to fully measure the result. Two red-coloured lines, even if the colour is weak, may indicate pregnancy, but to be on the safe side, we recommend testing again in a day or two, as the closer you get to your period, the stronger the hCG hormone in your urine will be, and so the line should be stronger. If the test line is a different colour than red/pink or looks more like a grey mark, the test is probably wrong.

I have used the test and got the result “pregnant” but now when I tested a bit later, I got the result “not pregnant”, or my period has started. What does this mean?

The test is 99% reliable in detecting the pregnancy hormone hCG from the day your period is expected. It is possible that you may get a result showing “Pregnant” but later take a new test with result showing “Not pregnant” or your period starts. This may be due to a natural miscarriage during the early stages of pregnancy. This is not unusual, as normally about one of four pregnancies unfortunately ends in an early miscarriage. If you get unexpected results, you should consult your midwife or gynecologist or doctor.

What do I do if the test shows “not pregnant”?

A negative test result means that no hCG has been detected in your urine or that the concentration of hCG is too low to be detected by the test (below 10 mIU/ml).

You may have mistaken the date of your expected menstruation. In a normal menstrual cycle bleeding usually occurs 12-14 days after ovulation. However, the time from the first day of bleeding to ovulation can vary more and this is what sometimes causes irregular menstruation.

    • If the test comes back negative, it may be because your ovulation took place later than you think.
    • If you tested early, you should test again when your period is expected.
    • If your period is late, you should test again after 1 week. If you again get a negative result and your period does not return, contact your midwife or gynecologist or doctor.

Can medicines or certain diseases affect the test result?

    • Birth control pills, painkillers, antibiotics or hormone treatments that do not contain hCG should not affect the test result.
    • Some medicines that contain hCG can give misleading results, such as fertility drugs taken with injections. If you test too soon after such an injection, the test result may incorrectly show “Pregnant”.
    • Other fertility treatments (e.g. clomiphene citrate), painkillers and hormonal contraceptives (e.g. the pill) do not affect the result.
    • If you have recently stopped taking hormonal contraceptives or are using fertility treatment such as clomiphene citrate, your periods may be irregular, which may cause you to test too early.
    • Ectopic pregnancy, ovarian cysts, menopause, certain rare diseases or if your urine contains large amounts of bacteria can give misleading results.
    • Contact your midwife or gynecologist or doctor if you get unexpected or inconsistent results.

Can drinking a lot of fluids affect the test result?

A very high fluid intake can dilute the urine, so that the amount of hCG present in the urine may not be detected. You should therefore not change your usual fluid intake. However, you can increase the hCG concentration in your urine by drinking less and not urinating for about 2 hours before the test. The safest way is to measure your morning urine.

    If no line is visible?

If no line appears, do a new test and follow the instructions carefully. This may be because you have not carried out the test correctly. Or the absorbent tip on the test has not absorbed enough urine.

What are the colours of the result lines that are shown?

The colours can vary from light red to dark red, depending on the concentration of hCG in the urine. The colour shade does not affect the result, but only red/pink colour gives a valid result. If you get a colour other than red/pink, wait a few days and take another test.

How long does the result last before it fades away or changes?

A positive result will usually remain unchanged, but the background may darken. Do not read any results after 5 minutes as this may give misleading results. Any changes after 10 minutes should be ignored.
