MEASURING HCG HORMONE
A pregnancy test, whether you take it at home yourself or at the midwife/doctor’s, measures the hCG hormone. When an egg is fertilized, the hormone hCG is secreted in the urine and continues to increase during the first part of pregnancy. By tracing hCG in the urine, one can determine whether a woman is pregnant or not. hCG normally begins to be produced by the fertilized egg after it has attached to the uterine wall, usually approx. 6-10 days after conception. The level then normally increases very quickly, and it is expected to double approximately every three days during the first trimester of pregnancy. Most women, by the time of the expected menstruation, have managed to produce enough hCG to see a positive result; that is, they have achieved an hCG level of 25mIU/ml, or more.
However, since we are all different, there may be individual variations. Some women may see a positive result a few days before the expected period, while others have to wait a little longer. If the test shows that you are pregnant, you can trust that the answer is correct because the tests are very sensitive. The test only informs that there is hCG in the urine. It says nothing about how the pregnancy is doing, where it is or how old it is.
How to take the test
You can test at any time of the day from the day you expect your period, but it is safest to measure the morning urine, when the hCG concentration is at its highest.
If the test shows a weak positive result, it is recommended to test again after a couple of days. When you have read the instructions and are ready to perform the test, remove the pregnancy test from the inner packaging. Use the test strip immediately.
Hold the red handle, NOT the white surface as it may give incorrect results.
Collect urine in a clean and dry container.
A couple of centimeters from the bottom is enough.
Hold the red handle, DO NOT TOUCH the white surface as this may give incorrect results.
Do the test – dip in the suction part
with downward facing arrows in the urine. Do not go further than the max line. Pick up the stick after 15 seconds and lay it flat on a clean, dry surface.
Wait for 1-5 minutesWait for 1-5 minutes before reading the result and let the test stick lie completely still. When the test strip begins to react, the entire result area turns bright pink.Do not read any results after 5 minutes as this may give misleading results.
One or two pink color bands appear against a light background in the result area next to the colored part, one line for control and the other line for test results.
Read the result as soon as possible after 5 minutes, do not read any results after 30 minutes.
Positive result – Pregnant
Two distinct pink/red lines appear in the results area. If you see two clear pink/red lines, it means you are most likely pregnant. The shade and color strength of the test line (T) may vary because different stages of pregnancy have different concentrations of hCG hormone.
The shade of color does not affect the result, but only a pink/red color means it is a valid result. If you have a different color wait two days and do a new test.
Negative result – Not pregnant
If only one pink line shows on the test stick it means that you are not pregnant.
If you still don’t get your period, do another test after 2 days, preferably with the first morning urine. If you get the same results and haven’t had your period, contact a doctor, midwife or gynecologist.
If no pink/red control line (C ) is visible, no lines at all appear, or if the lines are a color other than pink/red/purple, the test has not worked properly. This may be because the suction part has not absorbed enough urine or you have not performed the test correctly.
Do another test and follow the instructions carefully. If the problem persists, contact RFSU.
Sometimes the test line (T) may have a grey/white shade. The test is positive only when the test line (T) is clearly visible in a red, purple or pink shade.
I have tried your pregnancy test and get a very faint line what does that mean?
It may indicate that you are testing too early and the hCG level has not had time to rise enough in the body yet for the test to be able to measure the result. Two red streaks, even if the color is weak, indicate pregnancy. But, to be on the safe side, we recommend testing again in a day or two, the closer to your menstrual day, the stronger the hCG in the urine will be and thus there should be a stronger streak. If the test line is a color other than red/pink or looks more like a gray mark, there is probably something wrong with the test.
Is the pregnancy test vegan?
No, they are not classified as “vegan” products. The reagents used to measure the reliability of the test come from antibodies taken from mice.
I took a pregnancy test and got a red line right by the plastic, what does that mean?
A faint red line under or on the plastic strip is paint residue that has accumulated and can look like a line. A line indicating a pregnancy should be closer to the control line and above the plastic in the test area. The closer to the expected day of menstruation, the more certain the test result.
I used your pregnancy test and saw a faint line in the morning. Later in the evening the test had dried and the line looked stronger. Can I trust that it is positive?
The line may have a stronger color when it dries and has had time to attach itself to the material, if there is a line there then it should be positive. A positive line usually remains after the test has dried. The color shade of the lines can vary between light red to dark red – this does not affect the result. Two lines, no matter how faint, indicate pregnancy. But to be on the safe side, it might be good to test again in a day or two, the closer to your menstrual day, the stronger the hcg will be in the urine and thus there should be a stronger line
Can the the result be affected by how much liquid I drink?
Excessive fluid intake can dilute the urine, whereby the amount of hCG present in the urine may not be detectable. You should therefore not change your usual fluid intake. You can increase the hCG concentration in the urine by drinking less and not urinating for about 2 hours before the test is taken. The most reliable time is to measure your morning urine.
Can medication and diseases affect the result?
Birth control pills, painkillers, antibiotics or hormone treatments that do not contain hCG should not affect the test result. Some medicines containing hCG can give misleading results. The same applies to certain rare diseases and if your urine contains large amounts of bacteria. Contact your midwife or gynecologist if you get unexpected or inconsistent results.
What if there is no line visible?
If no line appears, do another test and follow the user manual carefully. This may be because you have not performed the test correctly
What colors are the lines?
The color shade can vary between light red to dark red, depending on the concentration of hCG in the urine. The color shade does not affect the result, but only a red color means it is a valid result. If you get a color other than red, wait a couple of days and take another test.
How long does the result last before it fades away or changes?
A positive answer will usually remain unchanged, but the background may darken. Do not read any results after 5 minutes as this may give misleading results.
